Why Liposuction?

Have you ever looked in the mirror and wished that you could simply remove fat from certain areas of your body? Perhaps you are satisfied with your overall appearance, but would like to fine-tune specific areas in order to create a smooth and svelte shape? If this is the case, liposuction may be the treatment for you.

Liposuction is a popular surgical cosmetic treatment among both men and women. A time-tested and proven treatment for reducing fat in targeted areas of the body, liposuction is considered by many professionals to be the “Gold Standard” for fat removal.

Here are a few reasons why I believe liposuction is so popular:

  • It is a quick and straightforward procedure, with limited downtime.
  • Liposuction can be used on various areas of the body, including the face.
  • It can be used to contour specific, targeted areas.
  • It can be combined with other procedures to “fine-tune” or produce a finished appearance.

While there are certainly several benefits to an Idaho liposuction treatment, not everyone is a good candidate for the procedure. In general, candidates are within their target weight, but have pockets of excess fat that they have not been able to remove with diet and exercise alone. For those who are not candidates for the surgical procedure, they may be candidates for the non-surgical fat removal alternative: CoolSculpting® by ZELTIQ™.

CoolSculpting can provide a small to moderate improvement in fat reduction for specific areas of the body. While the results are not directly comparable to liposuction treatments, CoolSculpting can yield impressive results of about a 20 to 25% reduction of fat in the targeted areas.

The best way to find out if you are a candidate for liposuction or CoolSculpting is to talk to a specialist. Your specialist can answer any questions you may have, or provide a surgical plan that can help you achieve your aesthetic goals.

Liposuction Myths Dispelled

While liposuction may be one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures performed today, there still seems to be a lot of misinformation available that causes confusion among my patients. To set the record straight, I am going to address a few common myths about liposuction, and provide you with correct information.

Myth 1: I don’t have to work out again after having liposuction.

Not only should you work out in order to lead a healthy lifestyle, you should also work out to ensure that you do not gain weight after you have experienced satisfying results from your procedure. I tell my liposuction patients from Spokane and Coeur d’Alene that the procedure should not be regarded as a weight loss technique, but rather, an “inch loss” technique.

Myth 2: Fat cells won’t return once suctioned.

While it is widely thought that when we reach adulthood our fat cells do not increase in number– just in size– this actually isn’t the case. While we do have most of our fat cells by the time we reach adulthood, if we do not lead an active and healthy lifestyle, not only can these cells expand, but they can increase in number.

Myth 3: I’ll have to spend a long time recovering from my liposuction treatment.

In the past, recovering from liposuction may have taken up to several weeks. Now, with advances in procedural techniques, recovery from liposuction is generally straightforward and simple. Typically, most people spend a week or two recovering, depending on the amount of fat removed from the target area or areas. As a general note, the more fat removed, the longer recovery will be.

What can you take away from this? Well, for one, there will always be misinformation regarding liposuction available, so it is important to discuss the procedure with a specialist in the field. They can tell you if you are a good candidate, and determine whether liposuction can help you achieve your goals.

The Basics of Liposuction

In Idaho, liposuction is a beneficial tool for both women and men as they pursue their cosmetic goals. Understanding the basic techniques involved in this popular procedure can increase any person’s overall comfort level prior to undergoing surgery. Although techniques vary among surgeons, most traditional liposuction procedures follow a similar pattern.

Once a person is considering this procedure, it’s important to look at various surgeons’ websites. A number of doctors offer complimentary consultations for people who sign up on online. Liposuction consultations generally consist of defining a person’s cosmetic goals, reviewing all medical history, and outlining the general steps involved in the procedure.

Depending on the area of the body a person would like to address, a series of small and relatively unnoticeable incisions are made. A thin tube, known as a cannula, is inserted under the skin and moved back and forth in a gentle motion. Fat is dislodged from the body, and then suctioned out through the cannula.

Additional techniques, such as Smartlipo™, are used to increase a person’s results and overall comfort level during recovery. This laser-assisted liposuction procedure liquefies fat deposits to reduce swelling and bruising after surgery. Although women and men will vary in the extent of liposuction required, most people can feel confident with this understanding of the procedure prior to undergoing surgery.

Injectable Fillers: Which One Should I Choose?

Quite often, I have people come to my practice looking for facial plastic surgery in Idaho, only to realize that they can achieve the results they are looking for with a non-surgical option. For instance, injectable fillers such as JUVÉDERM®, RADIESSE®, Restylane®, and Perlane®, all can help women and men achieve a more youthful appearance without the need for surgery.

With so many options to choose from, how does one know which filler is the appropriate choice for them? First, it is best to understand the difference between the fillers, and what each one is designed to correct.

JUVÉDERM- This filler is comprised of hyaluronic acid, which is a substance that is found naturally in the skin. JUVÉDERM works to increase volume by adding the filler in places such as the nasolabial folds.

RADIESSE Volumizing Filler- RADIESSE works to replenish volume and restore collagen by acting as a scaffold under the skin. Over time, the filler helps your skin rebuild collagen, and results can last up to a year or more.

Restylane- This filler is similar to JUVÉDERM in that it is made up of hyaluronic acid. This gel binds itself to water molecules and helps replenish volume in the skin.

Perlane- Perlane is used to correct moderate to severe lines and wrinkles. It is meant for deeper injection than its sister-product, Restylane.

While each filler is different, they all provide many benefits to help delay signs of aging. The best way to find out if a filler is right for you is to talk with a specialist.

4 Benefits of Liposuction

I perform liposuction for Spokane and Coeur d’Alene residents, but the benefits of this popular procedure are apparent to people across the nation. Here are four benefits women and men can expect when they plan for this popular and effective procedure:

  1. Liposuction provides an instant answer to excess fat and bulges that are difficult to remove through exercise and dieting. Once swelling subsides, the results are immediately apparent, giving people the contoured bodies they desire.
  2. Most doctors are willing to perform liposuction on multiple areas of the body at the same time. This is a great option for people who want to create comprehensive results.
  3. Liposuction serves as an excellent complementary procedure for women and men interested in more dramatic results. Combining liposuction with another procedure will help to enhance the benefits of both.
  4. Liposuction has the ability to not only enhance the contours of a person’s body, but it can also positively influence a person’s mental state. A number of people report increases in self-confidence that eventually translate to the workplace and home.

Cosmetic vs. Plastic Surgery

When it comes to the terms “cosmetic surgery” and “plastic surgery,” it seems as though they are synonymous with one another. While the two terms are related, they do not have the same meaning.

Cosmetic Surgery

The term “cosmetic surgery” refers to a type of plastic surgery. Cosmetic surgery in Spokane is probably the best-known type of plastic surgery, as it has become popular among both women and men. This type of plastic surgery is also known as “aesthetic surgery,” referring to the fact that the reason typically is due to a desire to improve the appearance. Cosmetic surgery usually is elective, and involves many types of procedures.

Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery differs from cosmetic surgery in that it is a surgical specialty designed to correct or reconstruct various parts of the body and face due to trauma, birth defects, burns, etc. Many, but not all, plastic surgeons perform cosmetic surgery. And, a majority of physicians in the United States performing excellent cosmetic surgery are in fact NOT Plastic Surgeons.

It is important to choose a qualified surgeon to perform your procedure, whether cosmetic or reconstructive. By choosing someone with board-certification in the appropriate field, you are ensuring that your surgeon has completed the necessary training and education to perform your procedure.

What Can be Gained from Liposuction?

So often, both women and men exercise and eat a healthy, balanced diet, but still cannot remove pockets of fat. In such cases, liposuction can help. However, it is important to note that liposuction should not be viewed as a means of weight loss. I tell my Idaho liposuction patients that the treatment should be viewed as a way to help improve body contours after dieting and exercise. Liposuction can also:

  • Improve overall appearance
  • Decrease body fat
  • Smooth body contours
  • Treat several areas where unwanted fat exists

Additionally, liposuction can be combined with other procedures such as a tummy tuck for optimal body contouring results. The best way to find out how liposuction can help you is to consult with your surgeon and find out if you are a good candidate.

Can Fat Return after a Liposuction Procedure?

Liposuction is one of the most popular procedures in the United States. Liposuction at my Spokane practice is helpful for women and men who have an excess amount of fat in a specific area that neither diet nor exercise can remove. In these instances, liposuction may be an appropriate measure to remove the fat deposits to provide a lean and smooth body contour.

With that said, it is important to remember that liposuction is not a permanent solution to weight loss. One question that I am often asked during a consultation is if fat will return after a liposuction procedure. The answer to this question has actually changed over the past few years. We used to think that we had a finite number of fat cells and those removed by liposuction would never return. That is actually true. However, fat has a large number of stem cells and as a result, the cells may multiply in an area even if some are removed. Ideally, if a patient has liposuction in a specific area and they maintain their weight and diet, the fat layer will not grow. And, most likely if they gain a few pounds, the fat will be evenly distributed on other areas preferentially. If they gain significant weight, then fat can and will accumulate in the liposuctioned area. So, in order to maintain results, we encourage a good diet and regular exercise.
